The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered a nationwide intensification of patrols and enforcement operations to ensure the safety of road users during the Valentine’s Day celebrations, warning motorists against excessive speeding, drunk driving, and all forms of reckless behavior.
He disclosed that the Corps has activated a comprehensive package of operational and public education measures designed to prevent road traffic crashes, noting that festive periods often record heightened movement, late-night travel, and risky driving patterns.
As part of the special intervention, Commanding Officers across the country have been directed to scale up patrol visibility through the massive deployment of personnel, patrol vehicles, and traffic control equipment along major highways, urban routes, and identified flashpoints.
The Corps Marshal emphasized that enforcement teams will operate with breathalysers and radar guns to detect intoxicated drivers and speed violators, stressing that anyone found driving under the influence of alcohol or exceeding speed limits will face immediate sanctions in accordance with traffic laws.
According to him, the proactive measures are necessary to avert avoidable tragedies, injuries, and destruction of property that often accompany celebratory outings, particularly during nighttime when visibility is reduced and driver alertness declines.
Reflecting on the essence of Valentine’s Day, he described the occasion as a global celebration of love, compassion, and human connection, urging motorists to demonstrate care for others by obeying traffic regulations and prioritizing safety over excitement.
He cautioned that the Corps would adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violations during the period, adding that enforcement operations would be sustained throughout the celebrations to deter dangerous driving practices.
Motorists and other road users were also encouraged to make use of the FRSC’s 122 toll-free emergency line to report crashes, obstructions, stranded vehicles, or reckless driving, assuring that prompt response teams are on standby nationwide.
The Corps Marshal further appealed for public cooperation with FRSC personnel on duty, noting that their presence on the roads is strictly to safeguard lives and ensure smooth traffic flow during the high-traffic season.
He particularly called on parents and guardians to guide young people, who statistics show are more vulnerable to risky behavior during festive periods, urging all celebrants to mark the day responsibly so that Valentine’s celebrations do not end in sorrow.
