The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has recorded a historic breakthrough with the acquisition of land for its permanent National Secretariat, signaling a new era of institutional stability and growth for the association.
The milestone was unveiled during a high-level courtesy visit by the NAWOJ National Executive, led by its National Chairperson, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, to the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya.
Addressing the NUJ leadership, Aisha Ibrahim disclosed that NAWOJ has successfully secured the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the land located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, after fulfilling all regulatory requirements.
She explained that the process followed due diligence, including approval from the National Executive Council (NEC), submission of official documentation, and compliance with statutory procedures.
According to her, the NEC had given full authorization for the acquisition, demonstrating the collective resolve of the association’s leadership.
Despite initial bureaucratic hurdles, she noted that strategic interventions and internal support ensured the successful completion of the process, with a total cost of ₦1,597,000.
Describing the development as a landmark achievement, the NAWOJ Chairperson said the permanent secretariat would serve as a cornerstone for advancing the welfare, unity, and professional capacity of women journalists across Nigeria.
She further revealed that plans are already underway to commence construction, with a focus on delivering a functional and befitting structure within the shortest possible time.
Aisha Ibrahim also expressed gratitude to key stakeholders, particularly the NUJ President, for his sustained support, including previous assistance that helped NAWOJ retain its national secretariat during a challenging period.
In his remarks, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, lauded the initiative, describing it as a legacy project that will benefit generations of women journalists.
He reaffirmed NUJ’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with NAWOJ and urged the association to fast-track development of the site through strategic partnerships.
The visit underscored the enduring partnership between NAWOJ and NUJ, anchored on a shared vision to promote the welfare, unity, and professional excellence of journalists in Nigeria.
