The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commended the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their rapid intervention following a violent mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, 19 February 2026, was triggered by a fatal crash involving two trucks around the Benin Toll Gate axis.
The collision reportedly claimed the life of one of the truck drivers and left several FRSC personnel critically injured during rescue operations.
Tragically, one of the injured officers later died despite receiving urgent medical attention.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that shortly after the crash, an irate mob descended on the FRSC Unit Command formation, vandalising facilities and heightening tensions in the area.
However, the swift deployment of security operatives helped restore calm and prevented further breakdown of law and order.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal condemned the attack on FRSC personnel and infrastructure, describing it as “deeply regrettable, unlawful and unacceptable,” especially as officers were carrying out their statutory duty of saving lives.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased truck driver, the fallen officer, and the entire FRSC family, assuring that the Corps will provide necessary support to the bereaved.
Ordering an immediate and comprehensive investigation, the Corps Marshal directed that both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, as well as the circumstances surrounding the mob action, be thoroughly examined.
He emphasised that anyone found culpable in the crash or the subsequent attack would face the full weight of the law.
Reaffirming the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to safer roads nationwide, the Corps Marshal called on members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and national security.
