Kogi Govt Commits 20 percent annual budget to Education

Kogi state Government said at the weekend in Lokoja that it commits 20 per cent of the state’s annual budget to education.

State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones who disclosed this said this was in line with Governor Yahaya Bello’s policy which emphasises qualitative education in the state, especially, the girl child education.

He said ” the Kogi state Government has placed education on the first thematic areas and 20 percent of its annual budget goes to education’, adding that the state government had established Guidance and Counseling units in schools across the state, especially, to check girls’ abuse.

He said the state government was meaningfully engaging the services of women in governance in the state, pointing that the number of women participation attained by Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration was far above the minimum requirement of the United Nation’s affirmative action.

On girl child education, the Commissioner said and the state government would continue to encourage, support and strengthen girl child education and commended the advocacy efforts of the Association of professional women Egineers. (APWEN) which has been championing girl child education in the state through scholarships and sponsorship of educational co-curriculum activities like inter schools Quiz competition among others.

The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Kogi state chapter of APWEN, Joan Oguche pledged that the Association would take its advocacy on girl child education to all the three Senatorial Districts in the state.

Government Day Secondary School, Adankolo- Lokoja emerged winner of the inter schools Quiz competition organised by APWEN while principal of the school, Chief Yakubu Godwin promised that the school would continue to work hard to win more laurels both at the state and national levels, pointing out that the performance of the students at the competition shows that public schools remain the best .
