The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has called for stronger actions to protect the rights of women and girls while promoting justice, inclusion, and equal opportunities across all sectors of society.
In a statement to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, celebrated globally under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls” with the campaign call #GiveToGain, the Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, said the theme underscores the need for deliberate efforts to achieve gender equality.
She noted that the pursuit of equality goes beyond discussions and requires practical steps to ensure that the rights of women and girls are protected and justice served whenever those rights are violated.
According to Ikpang, NAWOJ FCT remains committed to amplifying the voices of women, particularly those whose stories are rarely heard, while using the media as a tool to advocate policies that promote dignity, justice, and equality.
As part of efforts to support female journalists, she revealed that NAWOJ FCT has partnered with the Federal Medical Centre and the Ministry of Health to provide free cancer screening for female journalists in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing the importance of prioritizing women’s health through early detection and prevention.
The chairperson further disclosed that to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, NAWOJ FCT, in partnership with the German Embassy, is implementing two key programmes aimed at empowering women journalists.
These include a capacity-building programme designed to enhance professional competence and leadership skills among female journalists, as well as a Marketplace Advocacy Event that will engage grassroots women, promote awareness on issues affecting women and girls, and strengthen community advocacy.
Ikpang also reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting ongoing advocacy efforts for the actualization of Special Seats for Women in governance, describing it as a crucial step toward improving women’s representation in political leadership and decision-making in Nigeria.
She called on governments, institutions, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts toward ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and protection for women and girls.
The NAWOJ FCT chairperson also commended female journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for their resilience, professionalism, and dedication to telling impactful stories that highlight societal issues, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups.
She urged all stakeholders to remain committed to building a future where every woman and girl enjoys her full rights, has access to justice, and the opportunity to reach her full potential.
