The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Grace Ike, has called for increased investment in women through education, mentorship, opportunities, and resources, noting that empowering women ultimately strengthens society.
In a statement issued on Sunday to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), Ike said the theme “Give To Gain” highlights the importance of intentional support for women as a catalyst for sustainable development and inclusive growth.
According to her, when women are empowered, the impact extends beyond individuals to families, institutions, and communities, creating stronger and more responsive societies.
Reflecting on her own journey, Ike noted that her emergence as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council represents the result of years of resilience and the efforts of women who broke barriers and challenged stereotypes in the media profession.
She said: “When we intentionally invest in women, we are not merely supporting individuals; we are strengthening families, communities, institutions, and nations.”
The NUJ FCT Chairman added that the theme “Give To Gain” captures the reality that inclusive leadership and gender equality benefit all sectors, particularly the media.
She stressed that women journalists across Nigeria have continued to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and commitment to public service, while also mentoring younger colleagues and shaping public discourse.
Ike however noted that celebrating women should go beyond recognition to deliberate actions that promote gender inclusion.
She called for structured mentorship for young female journalists, safer and more supportive newsroom environments, and greater opportunities for women to participate in leadership and decision-making processes.
The NUJ FCT Chairman also referenced the United Nations call for the year — “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls”, urging governments, institutions, and media organisations to work together to remove barriers that hinder women’s advancement.
She commended female journalists within the NUJ, the FCT media community, and across Nigeria for their dedication, courage, and contributions to the profession.
Ike emphasised that empowering women not only strengthens journalism but also contributes to national development.
“When women rise, journalism rises, our communities thrive, and our nation grows stronger. When we give to women, we truly gain as a society,” she said.
