The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered a nationwide review of police security operations in a renewed effort to confront rising security threats and strengthen the protection of lives and property across the country.
The directive, which forms part of the ongoing reforms under the current police leadership, was issued to Commissioners of Police and other senior officers nationwide, with the IGP stressing the need for proactive policing, intelligence-driven operations, and closer collaboration with communities.
As part of the new security measures, the police chief approved the strategic redeployment of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) to critical commands across the federation to enhance operational efficiency and improve the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to respond swiftly to emerging security challenges.
IGP Disu charged police commanders to intensify intelligence gathering, dismantle criminal networks, and ensure that officers under their commands remain professional, disciplined, and responsive to the security needs of Nigerians.
He also directed all police formations to sustain aggressive operations against kidnappers, armed robbers, cult groups, terrorists, and other violent criminal elements threatening peace and national stability.
In a strong warning, the IGP ordered police personnel to take decisive action against individuals found in unlawful possession of firearms, emphasizing that illegal weapons remain a major driver of violent crimes across the country. He urged citizens to support the police with credible and timely information capable of preventing criminal activities and bringing offenders to justice.
Security observers say the latest directives reflect the determination of the IGP to deepen ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force by promoting intelligence-led policing, strengthening operational effectiveness, and improving public confidence in law enforcement.
Since assuming office, IGP Disu has continued to champion modern policing strategies, improved inter-agency cooperation, and community engagement, with many of his initiatives aimed at making the Force more responsive, accountable, and effective in tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges .
