The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has called on Nigerians to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health by undergoing testing for Hepatitis B, describing it as a deadly but preventable disease.

Shaibu advised employers of domestic staff including house helps, gatekeepers, drivers, and gardeners—to encourage and facilitate Hepatitis B testing, noting that early detection remains critical in reducing the spread of the infection.

He made this call during the 2026 Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Correspondents’ Chapel, held in Abuja.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Product Integrity, Regulatory Compliance and Safety Standards,” Shaibu emphasised the urgent need for individuals and organisations to prioritise health as a fundamental aspect of daily living. He stressed that maintaining high safety and health standards is essential not only for personal wellbeing but also for national productivity and development.

Shaibu further urged stakeholders across sectors to intensify awareness campaigns and ensure compliance with health regulations, particularly in workplaces and homes, to curb preventable diseases and promote a healthier society.
