Residents of Amasiri community in Ebonyi State have accused the state government led by Francis Ogbonna Erishi Nwifuru of overseeing a prolonged military operation that they say has resulted in widespread displacement, economic disruption, and an emerging humanitarian crisis.
In a statement issued to the public, community representatives alleged that recent government claims regarding the discovery of human remains in the area were misleading and aimed at portraying Amasiri as a violent and lawless community. They questioned how authorities determined the nature of the decomposing remains without what they described as proper forensic examination.
The residents further claimed that the narrative was being used to justify heavy security operations, which they described as excessive and indiscriminate.
Community leaders also alleged that a peace initiative involving traditional rulers and elders was compromised.
According to them, government representatives had encouraged respected leaders to perform a traditional reconciliation ceremony symbolized by the sharing of palm fronds, an act culturally associated with the cessation of hostilities.
Security personnel were reportedly present during the ceremony and pledged peace.
However, residents claim that military activities intensified shortly afterward, including house-to-house searches, arrests, and alleged shootings.
They further alleged that vulnerable groups, including elderly residents, were affected during the operations.
Residents say the security situation has severely disrupted normal life in the community.

Schools have been closed, leaving children out of classrooms
Farmers cannot access their farmlands.
Markets are no longer functioning.
Healthcare facilities have reportedly been shut down,
Injured persons allegedly lack access to treatment.
Community members also expressed concern that elderly and sick individuals may be at risk due to the lack of medical services.
These claims could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
Residents questioned why quarry companies operating in the area have allegedly continued their activities despite restrictions affecting local residents. They argued that while civilians face displacement and limited movement, extractive operations generating revenue have not been halted.
The community has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, as well as National and international human rights organizations, to investigate the situation and ensure the protection of civilians.
They stressed that their appeal is for justice and accountability, urging authorities not to overlook their concerns.
As of press time, the Ebonyi State Government had not issued an official response addressing the specific allegations raised by the community. The situation in Amasiri remains tense, with residents expressing fears of further escalation if urgent action is not taken.
