As preparations intensify for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has drawn a clear political line: his support will go only to candidates who openly align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration regardless of party affiliation.
The Minister made this declaration in Abuja on Saturday during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, an event that brought together political leaders, scholars, and dignitaries to honour a lifetime of scholarship, leadership, and service.
A Political Stand Without Apology
Addressing guests, Wike stated unequivocally that he owed no one an apology for his political position. According to him, his duty as FCT Minister includes ensuring that candidates who support the President succeed in the upcoming elections.
“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win. It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate that is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand.”
His remarks signal a strategic alignment between local electoral outcomes and national political direction, underscoring the administration’s emphasis on cohesion across governance tiers.
Celebrating Senator Sandy Onor at 60
Beyond politics, the event itself celebrated the life and accomplishments of Senator Sandy Onor, whom Wike described as a credible ally, trustworthy friend, and dependable brother.
He praised Onor’s loyalty and reliability, noting that true friendship reveals itself most during adversity. Wike affirmed his commitment to their relationship, stating that such bonds transcend political seasons.
From Academia to National Leadership
In a citation delivered by Professor Anthony Eyang, Onor’s life story was traced from his early years in Ikom, Cross River State, through his academic journey at the University of Calabar, and ultimately to his distinguished career in national politics and public service.
According to Eyang, Onor’s trajectory represents a life devoted to learning, leadership, and societal advancement—a profile reinforced by tributes from dignitaries across political and academic circles.

Chairman of the planning committee, Senator Philip Aduda, described the celebration as a thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness in Onor’s life and career.
Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom hailed him as “an icon and a great Nigerian prepared for leadership,” while former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), praised his courage and intellect, particularly his principled constitutional stance.
Historian Professor Dave Imbua highlighted Onor’s academic legacy while presenting a Festschrift compiled in his honour by scholars. The commemorative book was unveiled by former Abia State Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on behalf of Wike and associates, alongside a donation of ₦50 million.

In his response, Senator Onor reflected on lessons from six decades of life, emphasizing excellence, character, and faith.
“Everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent,” he remarked, thanking family, friends, and well-wishers for their support.
