Remi Tinubu Reportedly Questions Wike’s Loyalty: ‘Why Has He Never Worn My Husband’s Cap?’

By Uloma Peace Okorie

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reportedly raised questions about the visible demonstration of loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, amid discussions surrounding the proposed Rainbow Coalition and the political activities of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

According to a report circulating on social media, the First Lady expressed concern over what she reportedly viewed as a lack of visible public identification with her husband by some political associates who claim to support his administration.

The report specifically pointed to a cap associated with President Tinubu, alleging that Wike had never publicly worn it to demonstrate his support for the President.

The alleged remarks have drawn attention to the question of whether political loyalty should be demonstrated through public symbols, party affiliation or concrete political actions.

The Tinubu Cap Controversy

The cap associated with President Tinubu has become a recognisable symbol of his political identity, with supporters often wearing similar caps at political gatherings and public events.

According to the circulating report, the First Lady questioned why someone who claims to support her husband’s political ambition had not visibly embraced the symbol.

The report further alleged that she expressed concern about political arrangements that could create confusion within the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the specific comments attributed to the First Lady have not been independently verified.

Wike’s Political Position Under Scrutiny

Wike has maintained a distinctive political position since the 2023 general elections. Although he belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he accepted appointment as FCT Minister under President Tinubu’s administration.

His relationship with the President has continued to attract public attention, particularly amid discussions about political alliances and the proposed Rainbow Coalition.

While wearing a cap associated with a political leader may serve as a symbolic expression of support, it does not, on its own, establish whether a politician is loyal or disloyal. Such assessments also depend on documented political statements, affiliations and actions.

As the 2027 elections approach, the debate over party loyalty and political symbolism is likely to remain part of Nigeria’s evolving political conversation.

Editor’s note: The claims about the First Lady’s remarks and Wike’s alleged refusal to wear the cap require independent verification before publication as confirmed facts.
