In a significant move to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the public, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has called for a “strategic and respectful” partnership with the media.
Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Congress on Saturday, the IGP emphasized that the media is not just an observer but a vital institution essential for national stability and public trust.
Redefining the Relationship
IGP Disu, known for his long-standing rapport with the press, challenged the stereotypical treatment of media practitioners. He urged for a relationship built on mutual professional respect rather than one of condescension.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” Disu stated.
The police chief noted that when journalists are treated as professional peers, it fosters a culture of transparency and integrity, which are the twin pillars of public confidence.
Strengthening Security Communication
Beyond mutual respect, the IGP highlighted the practical benefits of this alliance.
He argued that a closer bond between the Nigeria Police Force and the media would:

In her response, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment, describing him as a “longstanding friend of the media.”
She expressed total confidence in Disu’s leadership and assured the Nigeria Police Force of the Council’s commitment to objective, responsible reporting on security matters. In a show of solidarity, Ike announced that the IGP will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the NUJ FCT Council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
