The Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Professor Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, has secured a major international leadership position following his election as Regional Representative for Sub-Saharan Africa and member of the Executive Board of the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organisations (WAITRO).
Professor Ike-Muonso emerged victorious in an election held at Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, reportedly securing over 75 per cent of the votes cast in a decisive demonstration of support for his candidacy.
His emergence represents an important opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in international conversations on industrial research, technological innovation, local raw materials development and sustainable industrialisation.
For Nigeria, the development comes at a time when the need to transform abundant natural resources into finished products, create employment and reduce dependence on imported goods remains a major national priority.
Since assuming leadership of RMRDC, Professor Ike-Muonso has placed renewed emphasis on showcasing the council’s research capacity, promoting value addition and encouraging the development of indigenous technologies that can drive local production.
The council’s pilot plants, which demonstrate the conversion of locally available raw materials into useful industrial products, reflect the practical importance of connecting scientific research with entrepreneurship, manufacturing and job creation.
His new position at WAITRO offers a platform for greater international engagement, research partnerships and the exchange of technological knowledge that could benefit Nigeria and other countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Beyond the individual achievement, the election highlights the importance of ensuring that African research institutions have a stronger voice in shaping global discussions on science, technology and industrial development.
For RMRDC, the international appointment presents an opportunity to strengthen its visibility, deepen institutional partnerships and advance its mission of promoting the development and utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant raw materials.
Professor Ike-Muonso’s election is therefore more than a personal milestone. It is an opportunity to bring Nigeria’s raw materials development agenda into wider international focus and promote practical solutions to the continent’s industrialisation challenges.
As Nigeria continues to pursue economic diversification, the challenge will be to translate this international platform into meaningful partnerships, technology transfer, investment opportunities and stronger local manufacturing capacity.
His election provides a fresh platform for Nigeria to amplify its voice in global technological research and advance the drive to turn indigenous raw materials into engines of industrial growth and national prosperity.
