The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned a controversial remark by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warning that such statements pose a serious threat to press freedom and democratic governance in the country.
In a statement issued by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union expressed deep concern over Wike’s comment directed at Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, in which he allegedly suggested he would have shot the journalist if it were possible to break through the screen.
The NUJ described the remark as reckless, dangerous, and capable of inciting hostility against media practitioners.
The union revealed that it had initially refrained from responding, expecting a swift retraction or apology from the minister. However, the continued silence,
it noted, raises concerns that the statement may have been intentional, further heightening fears about the safety and independence of journalists in Nigeria.
According to the NUJ, comments of such nature from a senior government official risk creating a climate of fear and intimidation, discouraging journalists from carrying out their constitutional duty of holding power to account. It stressed that a free press remains a cornerstone of any functioning democracy and must be protected at all costs.
The NUJ has therefore demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from Wike, while calling on the Federal Government to openly condemn the statement and take concrete steps to safeguard journalists across the country.
It also urged media organisations, civil society groups, and pro-democracy advocates to stand united against any attempt to silence the press, emphasizing that the protection of journalists is vital to preserving Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
