Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor, reporter, and producer at Arise News Channel, was tragically killed in an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on September 29, 2025. Her death has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice from various media organizations and government official.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT described Maduagwu’s passing as a “devastating loss” to her family, Arise News, and the entire Nigerian media industry. They called for a thorough forensic investigation into her death and urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists expressed deep sorrow over Maduagwu’s death, describing her as a dedicated, hardworking, and talented journalist.
They also called for a full investigation and stronger measures to protect journalists.
The management and staff of Arise News described Maduagwu as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family”. They pledged to uphold the values she stood for in journalism.
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, Condemned the incident and urged security agencies to track down her killers and bring them to book. He described Maduagwu as “a consummate professional” who “lit millions of screens with her superb delivery”.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris*: Described Maduagwu’s killing as “regrettable” and a “grievous loss” to the Nigerian media fraternity. He assured that the government would ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.
The Nigeria Police have reportedly launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maduagwu’s death.
The NUJ and NAWOJ have called for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure justice is served .
