The Northerns Elders Network, a prominent civil society organization, is urging Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State to exercise restraint in the face of recent developments in the state, between Amasiri and Oso/ Okporo Ojo.
In a statement signed by Malam Mohammed Ciroma, the Network expressed its concern over the escalating tensions in Amasiri community of Afikpo LGA of Ebonyi State and called on the Governor to prioritize peace and stability in the state, rather than take sides.
The statement reads: “The Northerns Elders Network has been following with concern the recent developments in Ebonyi State, particularly the tensions that have arisen following the Use of Military in the Amasiri case. We recognize the right to peaceful expression and assembly, but we also urge all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
“We call on Governor Francis Nwifuru to demonstrate leadership and statesmanship by promoting calm and ensuring that all parties engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences. Let the land in contention Oso, Okporo Ojo be demarcated.
We urge Gov Nwifuru to prioritize the peace and security of Ebonyi State and its people, and to ensure that the machinery of government is not used to intimidate or suppress any group or individuals, especially Amasiri as we have seen videos from there.
“The Northerns Elders Network believes that dialogue and peaceful resolution are the only viable options for resolving disputes and addressing grievances. We urge the State government to urgently demarcate the contentious land to bring about lasting Peace.
“We assure Governor Nwifuru of our unwavering support in promoting peace and stability in Ebonyi State and Nigeria as a whole.”
