The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has expressed deep shock and grief over the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a journalist, reporter, and presenter with Arise Television.

In a statement issued by its National President, Aisha Ibrahim, the association described Maduagwu as a dedicated professional whose creativity and commitment to journalism made her a distinguished member of the media community.

“Her untimely passing is a grievous loss to her family, Arise TV, and the public she served,” Ibrahim said. “NAWOJ insists that the investigation into her death must be thorough, impartial, transparent, and expedited to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and face the full weight of the law. Only decisive action will serve as a credible deterrent against further attacks on journalists and citizens.”

While acknowledging the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police, NAWOJ emphasized the urgent need for stronger safety guarantees for journalists, particularly female journalists who, it noted, face heightened vulnerabilities. The group called on government and security agencies to adopt enhanced protective measures, support systems, and preventive security strategies nationwide.

The association also extended its condolences to the bereaved family, her colleagues at Arise TV, and the wider media community.

“On behalf of NAWOJ, we mourn the loss of this vibrant talent and urge the authorities to ensure swift justice,” Ibrahim added.
