The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has partnered with the German Embassy in Nigeria to strengthen the capacity of women journalists in gender-sensitive and investigative reporting.
The collaboration is aimed at equipping female journalists with the knowledge, skills and tools required to amplify women’s voices and promote balanced media coverage on gender-related issues. The initiative will also enhance professionalism, leadership ability and ethical reporting among women journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during the engagement, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, explained that the partnership is part of efforts to improve competence among female media professionals and empower them to report more effectively on issues affecting women, children and vulnerable groups. She noted that capacity building remains critical in a fast-changing media landscape and will help female journalists remain relevant and impactful.
Ita-Ikpang further emphasized that training women journalists goes beyond professional development, stressing that empowering women in the media contributes to national development and strengthens democratic governance. She added that the programme will expose participants to modern reporting techniques, gender-sensitive storytelling, and ethical journalism practices.
In his remarks, a representative of the German Embassy reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusive journalism and gender equality. He said the partnership would provide expert facilitators, technical support and knowledge exchange opportunities to help women journalists strengthen their investigative and gender-focused reporting skills.
The collaboration is expected to benefit dozens of female journalists across the FCT through workshops, mentorship sessions and practical training. The initiative will also encourage responsible reporting that challenges stereotypes, promotes equality and gives visibility to women-related issues in society.
The partnership underscores NAWOJ’s commitment to empowering women journalists, promoting professional excellence and advancing gender-balanced storytelling in Nigeria’s media space.
