The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) gathered on Sunday evening to honor outstanding investigative journalists at the 5th Edition of the Beatrice Bassey Ita Best Investigative Journalists Award. The event, held in Calabar, was a vibrant celebration of truth, integrity, and perseverance in journalism.
In her keynote address, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Aisha Ibrahim, emphasized the critical role of investigative journalism in a world grappling with misinformation. “In a world with misinformation and sensationalism, investigative journalists’ role is critical. We must dig deeper, question the status quo, and expose the truth,” she stated. “Investigative journalism shines a light on corruption, injustice, and societal challenges, holding those in power accountable.”
The event was graced by His Excellency, the Governor of Cross River State, who was commended by the NAWOJ Chairperson for his leadership and commitment to promoting journalism and good governance. Ibrahim also expressed special gratitude to Senator Francis Ita Giwa, the daughter of the late Beatrice Bassey Ita, for her unwavering support and dedication to honoring her mother’s legacy through the award.
NAWOJ also acknowledged the presence of the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Cross River Chapter of the NUJ for their commitment to promoting investigative journalism. The Chairperson underscored that the award not only honors an extraordinary journalist’s legacy but also inspires the next generation to uphold the highest standards of the profession.
Addressing the nominees and awardees, Ibrahim said, “To our nominees, your dedication and commitment to uncovering the truth inspire us. To the winners, congratulations! Your work elevates journalism standards and inspires aspiring journalists.”
The Chairperson urged all NAWOJ members to continue pushing the boundaries of investigative journalism, remaining committed to uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable. She called on journalists to mentor and support one another to nurture the next generation of investigative journalists. “Together, we can make a difference and promote a culture of truth, justice, and integrity in journalism,” she concluded.
The celebration was a testament to the vital work of journalists and a call to action for the profession to remain steadfast in its commitment to fearless reporting. The evening concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a collective commitment to champion truth, justice, and integrity in journalism.
