The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their vital role in informing the public and supporting national development, while calling for deeper collaboration between the police and the media to strengthen security communication.
The police chief gave the commendation on Saturday while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council during their congress in Abuja.
Disu described journalists as critical stakeholders in nation-building, noting that a professional and respectful relationship between the police and the media is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring accurate dissemination of security information.
According to him, his long-standing relationship with journalists has always been built on mutual respect, professionalism, and understanding.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” the IGP said.
He stressed that the media plays an indispensable role in shaping public perception and promoting accountability, adding that stronger cooperation between security agencies and journalists would help improve public awareness on security matters and enhance national stability.
The IGP further urged both police officers and media practitioners to maintain high standards of professionalism and responsible conduct, emphasizing that positive actions and integrity leave lasting impressions in society.
Disu noted that the police under his leadership remain committed to building constructive partnerships with credible institutions, particularly the media, in order to effectively tackle security challenges and promote transparency in policing.
Responding, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment, describing him as a trusted friend of the media with a proven track record of professionalism and support for press freedom.
She expressed confidence that his leadership would further strengthen the relationship between the police and journalists across the country.
Ike also assured the police chief of the council’s readiness to continue collaborating with the police in promoting balanced and objective reporting on security issues.
She further disclosed that the IGP would be invited as a special guest at the council’s upcoming 2026 Press Week celebration.
The NUJ chairman reaffirmed the council’s commitment to responsible journalism and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at enhancing security, good governance, and public accountability in the nation’s capital.
