The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in all states of the federation as part of renewed efforts to combat violent crimes across the country.

The move is aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in addressing crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and murder, which have continued to pose serious security challenges in parts of the country.

According to police authorities, the VCRU will operate as a specialized unit driven by intelligence-led policing, enabling officers to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging threats. The unit is also expected to enhance coordination, improve response time, and ensure a more strategic approach to crime prevention and control.

As part of the reform, the VCRU will replace existing non-specialized tactical units, a development seen as a step toward professionalizing police operations and eliminating inefficiencies within the system.

The initiative underscores the commitment of the police leadership to modernize policing methods and improve public safety through targeted interventions and data-driven strategies.

Observers say the success of the VCRU will depend largely on adequate funding, training, and sustained oversight to ensure accountability and effectiveness in tackling violent crimes nationwide.
