Efficiency Demands Change: Reshuffle Long Serving Command CPs

By Uloma Peace Okorie

The new Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji  Disu, must take a critical look inward by reviewing and reshuffling the postings of Command Commissioners of Police (CPs) to enhance operational efficiency and accountability across the country.

Over time, it has been observed that some CPs remain in particular state commands for extended periods. While experience in a command can be beneficial, prolonged stay may lead to complacency, over-familiarity with the environment, and in some cases, compromised effectiveness. Regular redeployment is essential to inject fresh ideas, strengthen discipline, and prevent the development of unhealthy alliances that could undermine policing standards.

A strategic reshuffle would not only improve performance but also boost public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force. Citizens are more likely to trust a system that demonstrates transparency, fairness, and a commitment to results. Rotating CPs across commands ensures that no officer becomes too entrenched, thereby promoting professionalism and neutrality in the discharge of duties.

Furthermore, the security challenges facing Nigeria today require dynamic and proactive leadership at all levels. By redeploying officers based on merit, competence, and track record, the IGP can position the right personnel in areas where their expertise is most needed. This would enhance intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and rapid response to emerging threats.

In addition, periodic posting changes serve as motivation for officers, encouraging them to remain diligent and committed, knowing that performance is closely monitored and rewarded accordingly. It also creates opportunities for other capable officers to take on leadership roles and contribute to national security.

Ultimately, a well-thought-out reshuffle policy under IGP Disu’s leadership will send a strong message that efficiency, integrity, and accountability remain the cornerstone of policing in Nigeria.
