In an exclusive interview originally published by theasovilla, Ambassador Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Youth Director of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council’s Sports Mobilisation Committee, and aspirant for the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), outlined a transformative vision for Nigeria’s sports sector as a pivotal driver of economic growth.
Aligning his agenda with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that sports development must be integrated into national economic diversification and youth empowerment strategies.
While government initiatives like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative address education and technical skill gaps, he highlighted to theasovilla that sports encompasses a broader commercial ecosystem involving coaches, medical personnel, broadcasters, event organizers, and equipment manufacturers.
He lauded President Tinubu’s strategic decision to restore the National Sports Commission (NSC) under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, noting that the move gives sports administration a stronger commercial orientation, greater technical focus, and improved institutional governance.
Drawing from over two decades of basketball experience as a player in domestic leagues, university competitions, national youth setups, and abroad with Trafford Basketball Club in Manchester, Dr. Abdullahi brings a grounded perspective to sports administration.
Through his DAM Foundation, he has personally invested in grassroots infrastructure constructing a court in Kano, organizing tournaments in Okene, and supporting an academy serving over 500 children.
However, he observed during theasovilla feature that individual philanthropy cannot replace robust systems, underscoring the need for a seamless pipeline connecting schools, state associations, domestic leagues, and professional opportunities.
In launching his campaign for the NBBF presidency, Dr. Abdullahi aims to translate national policy into practical federation-level outcomes by establishing a predictable national competition calendar, introducing a digital player registration and statistics platform, and securing corporate sponsorship and broadcasting partnerships.
He also prioritized athlete welfare, medical support, and sustained funding for women’s basketball following the global achievements of D’Tigress.
As the country approaches 2027, Dr. Abdullahi told theasovilla that young Nigerians expect tangible, accessible opportunities, reaffirming his commitment as a public servant to ensure policy interventions deliver measurable progress in the daily lives of youth across the nation.
