Political momentum appears to be shifting in Abia State as strong indications emerge that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, may pose a formidable challenge to Governor Alex Otti in the next gubernatorial election.
Hon. Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is widely regarded as one of the most articulate and vibrant young politicians from the South East. His supporters describe him as a leader with the energy, clarity, and strategic mindset needed to reposition Abia for greater development.
Observers note that Hon. Kalu’s age and dynamism give him a visible edge over Governor Otti, who currently leads under the Labour Party (LP) platform. In contrast to the governor’s corporate and technocratic background, Kalu’s grassroots experience and national legislative exposure are seen as crucial advantages in understanding the needs and aspirations of ordinary Abians.
Over the years, the Deputy Speaker has implemented numerous constituency projects, ranging from rural infrastructure to youth empowerment and educational support initiatives, which have brought tangible improvement to the lives of his people. His ability to attract federal presence and foster unity across political divides has earned him respect beyond party lines.
Political analysts believe that if Kalu decides to join the 2027 governorship race, his combination of youthful energy, eloquence, and proven results could redefine Abia’s political landscape. They argue that Abia State, yearning for fresh ideas and inclusive governance, might find in Benjamin Kalu the leadership bridge between the old and new generations.
As political calculations intensify, one thing appears certain – the battle for Abia’s top seat may soon feature two of its most prominent sons, and Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s rising profile places him at the center of that conversation.
