Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has expressed confidence in Governor Alex Otti’s chances for a second term, citing the Governor’s impressive performance across Abia State.
Abaribe, fondly known as Nma-Agha Ndigbo (The Sword of the Igbos), voiced his optimism during a visit to Governor Otti alongside his wife on Sunday, January 5th, for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Following the meeting, Senator Abaribe told the press, “Even though I belong to APGA and Governor Otti is from the Labour Party, we’ve moved beyond party lines – this is about governance. I came to commend him for his exceptional work and encourage him to continue delivering for the people of Abia.”
Reflecting on Otti’s achievements, Abaribe remarked, “As someone from Aba, I can testify to the significant improvements in infrastructure. I’ve toured the area and seen the transformation firsthand. We plan to commission some of these projects in my senatorial zone soon.”
Regarding the Governor’s political future, Abaribe added, “Second tenure is still some way off, but judging by his accomplishments so far, I see no obstacles to his re-election.”
As Chairman of the South East Senators Forum, Abaribe disclosed that his discussions with Governor Otti centered on advancing governance in Abia and exploring how the National Assembly could support state development initiatives.
The conversation also touched on broader issues affecting the South East, including President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms. Abaribe assured that he would relay the region’s concerns to his colleagues in Abuja, ensuring that the South East’s interests are protected.
Senator Abaribe praised President Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure development in the South East, highlighting the President’s recent visit to Enugu to commission rail and other projects.
On the issue of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Abaribe expressed hope that President Tinubu would heed the calls for his release. “President Tinubu is a listening leader, and I trust he will consider the appeals from the Attorney General and others who recognize the importance of resolving this matter.”
Abaribe stressed the urgency of Kanu’s release, linking it to restoring peace and productivity in the South East. “Releasing Nnamdi Kanu could curb the criminal activities of those exploiting his name to justify violence. It’s essential for revitalizing the South East as Nigeria’s hub of production.”
He continued, “The President’s proposed tax reforms focus on boosting production. You can’t tax people who aren’t producing. Freeing Nnamdi Kanu will help remove barriers to productivity in our region.”
Abaribe reassured that South East leaders are willing to stand as guarantors for Kanu’s release. “We want the South East to thrive again and free itself from criminals who hijack legitimate agitations for selfish ends.”
The senator criticized the violence in the region, questioning, “Why kill the very people you claim to represent? That’s not how to agitate for change.”
On the tax reform bill before the National Assembly, Abaribe emphasized the need for thorough negotiations. “This bill will shape future generations, and we in the South East want to ensure it’s not rushed. The South East Senators Forum, alongside governors and stakeholders, is committed to further negotiations to safeguard our region’s interests.”
