The North-East Leaders of Thought has called on the Youths to call off its proposed nationwide protests, and give Government a little time to get things right. The appeal was made during a news conference put together to mark the 84th birthday of the NELT chairman, retired Major General IBM Haruna, in Abuja on Thursday.
He emphasized the great sacrifices made in the course of keeping this nation together and stable. Drawing from his military career, he said he joined the force with the determination to keep Nigeria united, especially during the civil war. He has asked the youth to give the government a chance to settle down to work, bearing in mind that just one year has passed since its term began.
Haruna commended the efforts the government was making to better living conditions, citing among others, sending palliatives to all states and taking several measures to tackle the national challenges. He charged those tasked with executing the government’s set tasks and appealed to the government to make its programmes compassionate and considerate.
He referred to how the current administration was elected in 2023 as an administration promising the “renewed hope” agenda, in view of people’s lost hope about their country. In any event, he confesses that things have gotten worse with the immediate removal of subsidies on essential commodities, increasing electricity tariffs, currency devaluation, and high transportation costs. Haruna called on the government to remember that its cardinal reason for existence is to guarantee security and welfare for its subjects by entailing the readiness to solve deepening economic crises.
