The Director-General, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, has declared that the nation is poised to reap substantial benefits from the latest US-Nigeria Bilateral Energy Cooperation. This came after the successful 3-day Strategic Energy Dialogue hosted in Washington, DC.
Speaking during the forum, Abdullahi explained that the US government was investing a reasonable amount in supporting the energy sector of Nigeria. This includes the technical assistance from the Energy and Mineral Governance Program of the US Department of State, said to reduce methane emissions in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. In the meantime, USAID, through its Power Africa initiative, will commit $75-85 million to strengthening the delivery of electricity in Nigeria with full sustainability of the sector.
It also provides the much-needed boost to clean energy with the CLEAN: Clean Energy Alliance of Nigeria that would be instrumental in driving investments in clean energy. The Net Zero World program from the US Department of Energy promised $1.3 million in providing technical support for clean energy.
He went on to praise the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration for its stride in ensuring that the oil and gas sector thrived, adding that the partnership would further increase the pace at which electricity is supplied in the country while being held to a safer and cleaner environment. He was hopeful that discussions would go on between 20-30 October 2024 to further solidify the partnership.
This collaboration represents an important milestone in furthering Nigeria’s journey toward a more sustainable and reliable energy future.
