The House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commended the Corps for its remarkable performance in 2024, particularly its aggressive enforcement of traffic laws, which resulted in a 100% increase in revenue.
This acknowledgment came during the appearance of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, before the Committee to present the 2024 budget performance and defend the proposed 2025 budget.
The FRSC exceeded its initial revenue projection of N2.9 billion by generating N5.9 billion in 2024, as highlighted in the performance report presented to the Committee. The Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Abiodun Derin Adesida, alongside other members, described the achievement as commendable and urged the Corps to sustain its efforts, especially in tackling traffic light violations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Committee noted the prevalence of traffic light violations in the FCT and emphasized the need for collaboration between the FRSC and the FCT Administration to ensure traffic lights are functional and violators are penalized. “This will not only enhance road safety but also significantly increase revenue from fines in the coming year,” they stated.
Honourable Adesida also sought clarification on reports of N1.9 billion generated by the FRSC as mentioned during the Senate budget defense. In response, the Corps Marshal clarified that the amount represented revenue from traffic violation fines, which were fully remitted to the Federation Account.
“Outside the N1.9 billion from fines, additional revenue sources such as number plates, driver’s licenses, signage, training, and towing services accounted for N3.2 billion, bringing the total revenue generated in 2024 to N5.9 billion. All funds were duly remitted to the Federation Account as documented in our report,” he explained.
Satisfied with the clarification and the overall performance report, the Committee adopted the 2024 budget performance and proceeded to review the FRSC’s 2025 budget proposals.
