The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed profound sadness over the tragic lone road crash that occurred in Kano State, extending heartfelt condolences to the Kano State Government and the bereaved families of the victims.
The fatal crash, which serves as a somber reminder of the pressing need for collective action against road traffic incidents in Nigeria, occurred on Saturday, 31 May 2025, at exactly 12:30 hours at Gadar Yankifi on the Kaduna-Kano Expressway.
The incident involved a Coaster bus with registration number KN 041 A17 belonging to the Kano State Government. The vehicle was transporting 24 individuals 23 male adults and 1 female adult on what is believed to have been a long overnight journey.
According to preliminary investigations, fatigue and excessive speed are suspected causes of the crash. Tragically, 21 male adults lost their lives at the scene, while 3 others 2 male adults and 1 female adult were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed strongly emphasized the responsibility of fleet operators to caution their drivers against fatigue-induced driving and excessive speeding, particularly during night hours when visibility is significantly reduced.
While extending his sympathies to the bereaved families and wishing comfort to those affected, he also commiserated with the Kano State Governor, His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf, recognizing the gravity of the loss suffered by the state.
The Corps Marshal urged all road users to place a premium on safety by obeying traffic laws, conducting routine vehicle checks, and ensuring drivers are adequately rested before embarking on journeys.
