The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, convened its monthly congress on March 15th, 2025. The meeting was presided over by the Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang.
Key Resolutions and Deliberations:
1. Protection of the Girl Child:
The Congress underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of the girl child.
Members were encouraged to advocate for and support initiatives that empower young girls to speak up against harassment and any form of abuse.
It was agreed that proactive measures should be taken to ensure swift action against perpetrators of harassment and gender-based violence.
2. Economic Reforms and Cost of Living:
Congress acknowledged the Federal Government’s policies on economic reforms, particularly the reduction in fuel pump prices and exchange rates.
However, members lamented the high cost of living and the continued surge in prices of essential commodities despite measures aimed at economic recovery.
The Federal Government was urged to take immediate steps to regulate commodity prices and alleviate the economic burden on citizens.
3. Electricity and Data Tariffs:
The Women Journalists condemned the recent hike in electricity unit and cost of data subscription rates.
It was emphasized that the continuous increase in these tariffs is unfavorable and places undue hardship on citizens.
NAWOJ called on relevant authorities to review and implement a fair pricing mechanism for electricity and internet services.
4. Regulation of Sachet Alcoholic Drinks:
o The Congress highlighted the increasing consumption of sachet alcoholic drinks, noting its detrimental impact on society.
Members called for stringent regulations to curb the indiscriminate sale and consumption of these products.
Government agencies were urged to take necessary steps to control the distribution and marketing of such beverages.
5. Affordable Housing for Journalists:
The Congress deliberated on the challenges posed by the incessant increase in house rents by FCT landlords.
Plans were considered to engage with relevant stakeholders to explore affordable housing options for journalists.
A call was made for policies that regulate house rent to ensure fair and accessible housing for media professionals.
6. 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) Programme:
NAWOJians were encouraged to participate actively in the upcoming 2025 International Women’s Day celebration slated for Wednesday 26th March 2025.
Themed “Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women,” the event aims to highlight the challenges and contributions of women in rural communities.
7. Recognition and Celebration:
Congress concluded with a vibrant celebration of members born in the month of March.
NAWOJ members were commended for their unwavering support and solidarity towards the former NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Stella Okononese.
The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women’s rights, social justice, and policies that promote the welfare of journalists and the general public.
