In celebration of Menstrual Hygiene Day, a Non Governmental Organization named Phoebe and Partners Support and Awareness Initiative, in collaboration with Girls and Goals Initiative and Other organizations have put together a program titled Project Pad Bank at Hassan Dallatu School in Suleja, Niger State.
Speaking during the enlightenment session on menstrual health Education , Mrs Mary Emmanuel Umoh, a Nurse talked on the common misconceptions, hygiene practices, and safe usage of menstrual products and urged girls to always practice personal hygiene in order to prevent infections, discomfort and embarrassment .
She said, proper disposal of pads as well as washing of hands before and after with soap are keys to sustainable personal hygiene.
In her welcome address, Miss Phoebe Michael, the convener, said Pad Bank Initiative is a sustainable menstrual hygiene solution that provides sanitary pads for girls who may be in need.
She stated that her organization is using the Project Pad Bank platform to reach out to many Students,giving young girls the tools, knowledge and dignity they deserve adding that the successful collaborative approach shows what can be achieved when organizations unite for a common cause.
The Convener encouraged the Students to take ownership of the Pad Bank and use it with care and safety.
She emphasized on the Reusable Pad-Making which was demonstrated to promote sustainability and self-sufficiency.
Miss Phoebe explained further that it is necessary to teach the girls how to make and maintain reusable menstrual pads in order to make them live a comfortable lifestyle and avoid odors during their menstrual period.
She therefore reiterated the commitment of the Non governmental organization which focused on youth,gender – sensitive towards creating a hygienic environment and promoting Education, Health and empowerment through advocacy to impact communities while soliciting for more partnerships.
The highlight of the program was the distribution of 300
Softcare Sanitary pads to Students which will help them have immediate access to essential menstrual hygiene products.Other
expected outcomes of the one day colourful event included Increased awareness and confidence among students regarding menstrual hygiene management,
Establishment of a functional Pad Bank at Hassan Dallatu School, Strengthened Community engagement through Student volunteerism.
